Aunty Claire
Loveboat, TaipeiAunty Claire is Rick’s pregnant aunt and Sophie’s relative, a gracious host whose welcome makes Ever feel embraced before she has resolved what Rick’s pretend-girlfriend introduction means. Through her affection, gifts, and comments about marriage, she embodies both the generosity of family hospitality and the traditional expectations that shape the younger women around her.
Identity and Introduction
When Sophie introduces Xavier at Aunty Claire’s home, Aunty Claire greets him and Rick with equal warmth. Rick then brings Ever forward as his girlfriend. Aunty Claire welcomes her rather than treating the unexpected announcement with suspicion, and immediately makes her feel at home, asking what food she likes and offering to have a maid go to the market. The moment catches Ever off guard: she is already uneasy about the role she is playing, while Rick’s proud-sounding introduction and Aunty Claire’s acceptance make it feel more real.
Hospitality and Gifts
Aunty Claire’s welcome continues through practical gestures. She asks Ever to join her in the kitchen and checks whether she would like to call her family. After Ever admires a flowering ornament, Aunty Claire gives her a small, tissue-wrapped present, apparently a soft garment. She explains that Rick is the son of her eldest brother and that, because his family lives in the United States, she does not get to dote on him as much as she would like. Her gift to Ever is therefore also an expression of affection for Rick: welcoming the person he has brought home lets Aunty Claire extend care to him.
Aunty Claire also relates her own marriage to Ted as a story of change. She says she felt lucky when he found her and that, even when he was still a stranger, she sensed that everything was about to change. She is glad Rick has met Ever. Ever is touched by the warmth but remains uncomfortable with how readily the household appears to treat her as Rick’s destined partner; kindness does not erase the complications of their pretend relationship.
Family Expectations
Aunty Claire’s warmth coexists with strong expectations around marriage. Sophie’s family can be unconventional in some respects, but marriage is treated with particular seriousness: an uncle’s remark about Sophie earning her degree from Dartmouth only to become a wife is not a joke, and Aunty Claire’s own comments reinforce the pressure Ever observes. Ever contrasts this with her own family, where control took a different form and her parents had not asked her to please them through relationships with boys. Seeing the contrast leads her to feel pity for Sophie, whose pursuit of a suitable man is connected to her family’s expectations rather than simply to glamour or ambition.
Narrative Significance
Aunty Claire’s scenes complicate the idea that family pressure is expressed only through open conflict. Her welcome and generosity are sincere, yet her confidence in the significance of Rick and Ever’s relationship adds weight to a claim Ever cannot comfortably inhabit. Her character also helps reveal how affection and tradition can operate together: she cares for Rick and extends that care to Ever, while taking marriage and family roles seriously. Through her, the home offers Ever both a sense of belonging and a glimpse of expectations she does not share.
